HERstory Made at AGP Philippines Pro Qualifier

Updated: Sep 16, 2024

The AGP Philippines Pro Qualifier, hosted by NPC/ IFBB Pro Philippines and organized by Red Panda Productions, was a stunning display of athleticism and dedication. The event, held at the magnificent Aliw Theater in Pasay, Philippines, showcased an impressive lineup of competitors from all over Asia and Europe.

The AGP Regionals, held on June 2nd and then also on the morning of August 25th, gave us a glimpse of the incredible talent that IFBB was bringing to the stage. The anticipation for the Pro Qualifier was high, and it did not disappoint. On August 25th, the Aliw Theater was filled with excitement as athletes from countries like Russia, Thailand, Australia, Japan, Korea, and even Palau competed in the AGP Regionals and then took the stage in the afternoon for a coveted pro card.

Unlike most other shows where competitors mingle with the crowd, AGP maintained a professional and immersive atmosphere. The Aliw Theater, with its spacious backstage area and stunning auditorium, provided a perfect setting for the competition. Competitors were kept separate from the audience, creating a sense of anticipation and excitement as they took the stage.  While the venue was undeniably exceptional, there was a minor inconvenience for competitors who had to use the hallway and bathrooms as their backstage space. This was a departure from the private rooms provided at the Regionals in June.

The IFBB team from Korea deserves a big shoutout for their impeccable organization and punctuality. The show's production was top-notch, with a giant screen showcasing close-ups of the athletes, perfectly placed spotlights, and perfectly cued music. Athletes waited backstage, behind a thick curtain, eagerly anticipating their turn on stage. The excitement backstage was palpable as athletes awaited their lineup call. There was a mix of nerves and anticipation, but the energy was infectious. Joven Sagabain, a Filipino Olympian, and Abi Jimenez, a women’s physique pro bodybuilder, were honored guests who presented some of the awards to the competitors.  And, if the energy wasn't positive enough, Red Panda's sponsored athletes, like Pako and CJ, were there to help get competitors motivated and in line with the event's busy schedule. Their presence added to the overall excitement and enthusiasm of the competition.

As soon as the competitors stepped off stage, Red Panda Productions was ready to capture their moment with a professional photoshoot. Backstage, a multitude of languages buzzed as athletes mingled and prepared with their coaches.

The level of conditioning among the athletes was extraordinary, making it incredibly difficult for the judges to determine the winners. The competition was fierce, and every athlete brought their A-game.

Norliza Dewana, a Malaysian athlete, made HERstory at the event by becoming the first female Malaysian woman to win the IFBB pro card in the Women’s Figure open category. Her victory is a testament to her dedication, hard work, and unwavering determination. By competing in the figure category, Dewana is setting a powerful example for other women in the sport, inspiring them to challenge traditional norms and pursue their own fitness goals. In a world where many women choose the bikini category, Dewana’s decision to compete in figure is a bold and refreshing choice that could encourage more women to explore different divisions within bodybuilding.

With the success of the AGP Philippines Pro Qualifier, it’s clear that the Aliw Theater is becoming a premier venue for bodybuilding events. We hope to see more competitions held there in the future.

IFBB is known for setting exceptionally high standards for its athletes. Winning an IFBB pro card is no easy feat, as it signifies a level of excellence that is recognized internationally. It’s surprising that more people don’t attend IFBB events to witness the quality of athleticism, understand the judging criteria, and experience the excitement firsthand.
